Albert Harbridge was born in 1876 at Birmingham, England
and came to the United States when he was seven years
old. As a youth he joined the military band during the
Spanish-American War.
Following the war he located in Mexico City for two
years where he noticed an advertisement for a watch maker
at Allen's Jewelry Store in Trinidad, Colorado. After
several years in Trinidad, he and Bertram A. Rhoades joined
in partnership and purchased the business under the name
of Rhodes-Harbridge Jewelry Company. They remained in
business at 111 East main until 1951 when they retired.
In the meantime he married Florence Salmon and two children
were born.
Always interested in music, he contributed to the enrichment
of community by being conductor of the local band that
offered concerts in Kit Carson Park. He was director of
the Monday Music Club which was a choral group of approximately
30 men and women who gave an annual performance for the
community in the form of light opera. he owned a marimba,
arranged the music for three part harmony and offered
music selections in conjunction with his daughter and
her close friend to any club or community program at the
cost of transporting the marimba to and from the site
of the performance. He entered a national competition
for original sacred music and won first place. To this
day the Methodist choir performs his composition annually.
