Charlie Hartman met Annie (Perkins) in Southern Texas,
where he was playing baseball, and she worked in a restaurant.
Upon seeing him for the first time, she said, "that
is the Man I'm going to marry." She had been married
before, and had 2 children, Wanda Faye and Rex Perkins.
They did marry and had a son, Charlie Jr.
They
migrated from Texas to Colorado in the early l900's, and
homesteaded on land 40-50 miles Southeast of Trinidad.
They made the trip with a horse and wagon. They built
a rock home on the property, and lived there until the
late 1920's, when they moved to Hoehne, Colorado, where
Charlie opened and operated the Hoehne Blacksmith Shop.
In the early 1930's, Charlie purchased land near the original
blacksmith shop. He, along with help from friends and
family, hauled truckloads of rock from the proximity of
their homestead, and constructed a two story rock house
with the blacksmith shop attached. The building remains
to this day.
Charlie died in 1950, after being married for 48 years
to Annie. Annie died in 1955. Charlie Jr. continued to
operate the Hoehne Blacksmith Shop until the mid 1970's,
at which time poor health forced him to close the shop.
He died on June 4, 1978 at the age of 68.
