Emily is the daughter of Frank and Teresa Salerno.
Emily graduated from Hoehne High School, attended Trinidad
Junior College, and Western State. She taught school
for several years in the Trinidad area (Holy Trinity,
El Moro, North Garcia, and Tercio) before enlisting in
the W.A.A.C. during W.W.II. She was a Quarter Master
(T-5) and served in New Guinea and the Philippines. Emily
received the Good Conduct Medal, two Victory Medals,
the American Theater Medal, and the Asiatic/Pacific Ribbon
with three Battle Stars.
Following the war, she met and married
Wilson E. Arant, and they settled in Denver, Colorado.
They have four children: Teresa (married Bob Compton)
had
three children, Sarah, Bobby, and Julia, and is a Montessori teacher certified
paralegal. Theresa and family reside in Trinidad. Janice (married Lex Thompson)
has two foster children, Maria and Maffie, and is an elementary teacher in
Walsh. Ron (married Wendy Torres) is an elementary teacher and lives in El
Moro. Frank is a recreation director and lives in Denver. Emily re-entered
the field of education in 1965 after extending her education at U.N.C. She
has taught Head Start in Denver for 23 years, and is currently enriching
the lives of little ones in that program.
