The
sheriff of Trinidad in 1890 was Lewis (Louis) M. Kreeger.
He took over as sheriff after Bat Masterson quit. The
two had worked together, but Bat Masterson also ran a
Farel Table for gamblers and soon left town. Lewis lived
in Trinidad since 1848 and served as sheriff for 30 years.
He and his wife Julianita and family lived in the Trinidad
Jail House Quarters. His story was documented in 1986
in the True West Magazine where he is described as a courageous
and dedicated lawman. Their daughter was Phoebe and she
married Fred Silva who worked for the city. Fred and Phoebe
had Joseph, Alex, John, and Delores.
Joseph
joined the army after graduating from high school in 1941
and was stationed in Honolulu when the Japanese attacked
Pearl Harbor. He was in church that Sunday morning of
December 7 and continued to work in an office during the
war. He was honorably discharged on July 17, 1945 and
moved to San Diego. Three months later at the age of 23
he became critically ill and passed away of Leukemia.
Alex
lives in Denver. His oldest son Michael, flies a helicopter
for Channel 4 News and is also working with the Colorado
State University to create an advanced radar system. he
was featured in the January, 1989 "Reader's Digest"
for stopping a killer with his helicopter and a movie
was made of the episode. Michael is also featured in the
February, 1993 issue of Reader's Digest for rescuing three
lost hikers from a rock ledge in the Rocky Mountains.
That story is called "Trapped at 12,000 feet".
He is also a decorated Vietnam War Veteran with more than
1100 hours of night combat flying to his credit.
The
story of Dolores is written under the title of Dolores
I. Silva Fromang. At the present time Joseph and John
are deceased.
The
oldest grandson of Dolores is Gerald Jr., a Navy Grunt
Corpsman stationed at 29 Palms, CA. He has gone through
special training at the Marine Corps Close Combat School
Other grandchildren include: Francesca, Antonina, Joe
and Mitchell. They all love to visit grandmother and the
San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World, Balboas Park
Museum and old Town State Park in San Diego. Mitchell
was awarded the Educational Excellence Award in the fifth
grade at Lake havasu, Arizona.
