Transportation Trinidad is located in the center of the major markets of the South West, including Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo to the North, Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Amarillo to the East, Dallas, Austin and Houston to the Southeast and Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Phoenix and Tucson to the Southwest. Trinidad is located at the base of Raton Pass: the second most busy gateway to Colorado on I-25. It carries more tourism traffic than any other entrance to the state. The location of I-25 through the community and the location of the Santa Fe and Burlington Northern railroad lines gives Trinidad a unique and advantageous transportation location. The ready availability of highway, rail and air transportation is an open door to conducting regional and national business from the Trinidad area.
Highway Interstate 25 intersects Trinidad north-to-south and provides six city exits. U.S. Highways, 350 and 160 enter the community from the northeast. State Highway 12, The Scenic Highway of Legends, winds west and north from Trinidad into the past and into some of the finest mountain territory in Colorado.
Greyhound Bus Lines operates eleven buses per day through Trinidad, providing easy connections for passengers and small freight to the north, south and southwest via I-25. Good bus connections are available to the northeast and southeast from major stops along the I-25 corridor. The
Trinidad-Las Animas County area has service from eight
motor freight lines which interline into the area via
local carriers. All are common carriers; seven are licensed
intrastate and interstate. There are two local freight
terminals serving all parts of the country. Railroad Mainline railroad service makes rail shipping convenient and advantageous from Trinidad. The Burlington Northern main north south line runs through the heart of the Trinidad Development Park. The
main Santa Fe east-west line from Kansas City to Los Angeles
comes into Trinidad from the northeast and exits south
via Raton Pass to Albuquerque. Those business travelers
who might wish to utilize rail passenger service have
the advantage of Amtrak, which makes two scheduled stops
in Trinidad along Santa Fe rails daily. Rail freight service
is available daily, as well as piggyback ramp service.
Air Service The Las Animas County Airport, located 10 miles northeast of Trinidad, services local air transportation needs with its 5,500' hard surface runway and 5,500' auxiliary runway. The airport features VASI, visual approach glide indicators, directional finder, rotating beacon, VOR runway light system and low frequency instrument landing system. Charter aircraft can be made available at the airport. Taxi and van services are available to the airport and throughout the Trinidad area. Passenger Air Service is located in Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Denver and in Albuquerque. Connections are available worldwide. Trinidad is located at the junction of three key light aircraft route through the mountain West-Raton Pass to the south, La Veta Pass to the West and Mesa de Maya to the southeast. Airports The major airports that will get you to Trinidad are the Colorado Springs Airport, which is the closest airport being about 2 hours away. Or the Denver Airport which will put you about 3.5 hours away but you might get better prices into this airport. Or is you have the time you might fly into the Albuquerque Airport and that will put you within about 4 hours of Trinidad.
