L. D. WARD, Jr. (Pete)

Lifetime Las Animas County resident, L.D. (Pete) Ward, Jr.,55, died March 14, 2004. Pete was born September 17, 1948 in Trinidad, Colo., to L.D. and Mary (Pritchard) Ward. He was the youngest of six children; Darlene, Elaine, Kathleen, Eleanor and Karen. He graduated from Branson High School with the Class of 1966. He went on to Lamar Junior College, and then transferred to Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma, where he received a degree in Animal Nutrition.

Pete married Mary Jane McMillan on December 28, 1970. They had two sons, Will Daniel and Walter Toy.

During Pete's lifetime, he enjoyed working with cattle, horses and sheep. He worked on ranches in Colorado, Montana and New Mexico, before moving back to the family ranch northeast of Trinidad where he raised Black Angus cattle, and worked for the National Resource Conservation Service in Las Animas County.

He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Mary Jane of Trinidad, CO and sons, Will D. (Delrae) and Walter T.; sisters, Kathleen (Walter) Hesse, Amarillo, TX; Eleanor (Ellis) Weir, La Veta, CO and numerous other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, L.D. Sr. and Mary Ward and sisters, Darlene, Elaine and Karen.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 17 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home Chapel. Memorial service is planned for Thursday, March 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Faith Christian Fellowship with Pastor Bill Frashuer. Inurnment to follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Branson, Colorado.
