Three weeks after celebrating her 100th birthday with her family, Anna Margaret Maglia Smith Bacus died peacefully from complications of pneumonia at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, Calif., with her loving family and long-term caregiver, Marilyn, at her side.

Anna was born to Italian immigrants, Charles and Domenica Maglia in Starkville, a small coal-mining town near Trinidad where her family lived for most of her early childhood. She was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Hoehne High School in a small agricultural community near Trinidad. She earned her B.A. degree at Colorado State Teachers College, Greeley, and received her Master’s in Education degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She was a lifelong educator humbly beginning her career in one-room country schools in Apishapa, Model, and Chicosa, all small communities near Trinidad.

In 1940, she married William R. “Bill” Smith and was blessed with two sons, Roger, born in 1941, and Kenneth, born in 1944. Bill was a flight instructor with the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed at various locations in Texas where their son Kenneth was born. Following the war, Bill returned to his job with Colorado Interstate Gas Company and the family lived in company-owned housing in “booster stations” along natural gas pipelines near Trinidad, and subsequently in other locations in Colorado, Texas, and Kansas. Anna taught school in all of those locations. Morton County Station, 19 miles north of Elkhart, Kan., became home for the family from 1954 until Bill’s unexpected sudden death in 1965. Anna particularly treasured the time when she taught English, Literature, and Speech in the high school in Elkhart where she served as a role model for both students and faculty. Following Bill’s sudden death, she returned to her hometown, Trinidad, and the love and support of her family of origin, where she began the later chapter of her teaching career at Trinidad State Junior College as a professor of English and Literature. God blessed her with a new love and she married Leland C. Bacus in 1967 becoming the loving stepmother of Leland B. Bacus and Paul Bacus. After Leland passed away in 1996, she later relocated to Cupertino, Calif., residing in the Forum at Rancho San Antonio Retirement Community to live closer to her sons in California.

Anna was involved in many organizations including P.E.O. Sisterhood - Chapter J, American Association of University Women, Business and Professional Women, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the University of Colorado Alumni Association. She was recognized as one of its outstanding alumni in 1987. She was devoted to her Catholic faith throughout her life.

She joyfully celebrated her 100th birthday on Easter weekend with her entire family travelling from various parts of the country to be with her. At that celebration, she was presented with accolades from the presidents of the University of Colorado, the Ohio State University, Trinidad State Junior College, and President Obama. The mayor of the city of Trinidad also honored her with a proclamation naming March 29, 2013, as Anna Maglia Smith Bacus Day. She was delighted that on July 28, 2012, her Maglia/Guglielmotto family was recognized by the Trinidad Historical Society as one of Las Animas County’s Century Families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Domenica (Minnie) Maglia, her first husband, William “Bill” Smith (1965), her second husband, Leland C. Bacus (1996), brothers, Dominic “Red” (1960) and Paul Maglia (2003), and stepson, Leland B. Bacus (1996). Anna is survived by her sons, Roger and his wife, Judy Kay, of Palo Alto, Calif., Kenneth of Sunnyvale, Calif., and his wife, Kitty Smith, of Ardmore, Penn., and stepson Paul and his wife, Alison, of Lafayette; her sister, Lena Cimino of Trinidad; her grandchildren, Rene, Kirsten, Farrell, and their mother, Andrea Smith, Jennifer and her mother, Judi Smith, Geoff, Matt, and their mother, Terrell Smith, Sarah, Andy, and Haley; her great-grandchildren, Zack, Tara, Nick, Malia, Marcus, Casey, Lindsey, Hazel, Oliver, Bailey, Abby, and Demi; nieces, Carol and Leanna, and nephew, Gerald, and countless others whose lives were so affectionately touched by her.

A memorial service was held April 20, 2013, in Mountain View, Calif.

Anna was very pleased to help TSJC students with her Smith-Bacus Scholarship so, in lieu of flowers, would prefer donations be made to Trinidad State Junior College Education Foundation. The family would like to thank her long-term caregiver, Marilyn Parayno, the nursing and medical staff at El Camino Hospital, and all of those at the Forum at Rancho San Antonio Healthcare Center who were devoted to the care of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Anna, whose unconditional love and gratitude endures forever.

A visitation will be held at Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home, Thursday, April 25, from 4-7 p.m. Family and friends are invited to a recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Church Friday, April 26, at 10 a.m. Internment will follow immediately at Trinidad Catholic Cemetery.

The family has entrusted the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home with the arrangements.
