Shirley Mae Lyons, age 72, passed away at her home on February 20, 2005. She was born in Hoehne, Colorado on March 29, 1932 to Charles and Josephine (Benavidez) Freyta.
She graduated from Hoehne High School in 1949 and then went to work for Gates Rubber Company in Denver, Colorado. Shirley joined the Army Signal Corps and after three years married and started a family. She worked several jobs to support her family, one of which was the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Denver. Shirley loved to dance. Later she went to work for Martin-Marrietta wiring nose cones in missiles. She moved to Las Vegas in the 1960's and was a cashier at the Sahara Casino. She also ran for city council in Las Vegas. Moving back to Denver, she worked for Social Services and then started her own business making custom drapery. She then remarried and became a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by parents and brother Bobby Freyta.
She is survived by sons Lenny Lyons (Debbie Martin), Arthur (Connie) Lyons, Bobby (Katherine Denham) Lyons and Cory Hawk all of Trinidad. Sisters Cecelia Van Alstein of Bennett, Colorado; Anita Hathaway and Constance Ratzell both of Denver, brother John (Kay) Gallegos of Trinidad; grandchildren Miechele, Joey, Johnny, Joshua, Christopher, Gabriel, Arthur (Skip), Adam, Derrick, Brandi, and Chelsea. Seven great-grandchildren also survive.
Visitation will be Thursday February 24, 2005 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday February 25, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Trinidad Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Fort Carson Honor Guard.. The family of Shirley Mae Lyons has entrusted her care to the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home.
