Daniel Chavez, 84, died March 15, 2005 peacefully at his home in Trinidad, Colo. He was born May 6, 1920 in Sopris, Colo. to Dodoterio and Tomasita (Gonzales) Chavez. He was married to Stella Olivia Montoya on May 25, 1946.
He worked as a miner for 14 years and then in construction for over 25 years before he retired. He worked at the CC camps for 3 1/2 years before leaving for the military and serving in WWII. He was a highly decorated WWII veteran, where he served in most European theaters including; D-day, The Big Red One, and Normandy. He was missing in action, wounded in action twice and awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Normandy Medal and many others.
He is survived by his wife Olivia Chavez; son Daniel Chavez Jr.; daughter Tomi (Gary) Bragg; granddaughter Rhonda (Robert) Lawson; great-granddaughters Mandi Chavez, Kasey Gonzales and Tori Lawson all from Denver, Colo.; first cousin Ernie Medina from Trinidad, Colo.; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Cremation was held and there will be private family services at a later date.
The family has entrusted Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home with the arrangements.
