    Nola Butte?,No! Fisher's Peak!!!

This photo hung in my Great grandfathers house in Trinidad and it was said it was possibly Nola Butte. Does anyone recognize this or know where it is. It was framed by By Crane and Co. Possibly in Raton ,NM. Thanks,.........Sean from Nashville
I am adding a Scanned version of the photo for your enjoyment! Would this have been taken to the West?

That looks like Fisher's Peak on Raton Pass to me.

DB, you are correct. It is Fisher's Peak. Sean check the following site that has a small article with picture on Fisher's Peak.

Thanks DB, and Dodie, I guess if I had more experience with the geography in the area I'd have known! Thanks for the quick reply. ....Sean

Sean, is this an original oil painting or a reprint? Any dates on it? It is quite an interesting piece. I like the backdrop of the looming thunder clouds. Not a sight we see enough around here. [8D]

It almost looks pre-trinidad due to the lack of buildings or perhaps its the angle of perception. There is an odd building off of the center right. I can't quite make it out to identify exactly what it is - that object may be one way of dating the work.

Dodie: any idea what that building may be?

Indeed an interesting piece either way. Nice momento to keep in the family.

This looks like a view from on top of Engleville hill from outside the Montoya or old Connell property. That building looks like the old mine opening.

DB and Pete, Sean descends from Felipe Tafoya and Maria Concepcion Salazar, his great grandparents, who came from Mora in 1859 and settled in Trinchera. Sean has received the map and plat from the Bureau of Land Management that shows the exact location of land that his grandfather received as part of a land grant in 1862.

Sean is coming to Trinidad to see the location of his ancestors' homestead. The building in the picture could possibly be part of Felipe Tafoya's ranch? Sean mentions Nola Butte which is classified as a summit in Trinchera. I don't know where Trinchera was located but could the area below Fisher's Peak be Nola Butte?

There are several postings made in Genealogy Forum under "Tafoya, Gallegos, Baca Families".

Dodie, The Picture is actually a Photograph and I was told it hung in my Great Grandfathers house, my Grandmother, Rose Tafoya always referred to it as "Trinchera". Felipe's Property was on Trinchera Creek 25 to 30 miles East of Trinidad and my BLM maps show that! I do not yet know what the view from there is but will soon! Nola Butte is within just a few miles of Trinchera Creek and the only reason I thought the Photo was Nola is I am assuming Nola Butte is in view from the ranch. There are two people visible in the photo from a distance. What direction would this have been taken?? Thanks, Sean... Nashville

Sean, Pete might be accurate about Engleville. Just looked at a picture of Fisher's Peak viewing from Starkville. Check the picture out at:
    http://digital.denverlibrary.org/

Also on this site is a picture of a baby. Search under the name of Tafoya: Call Number: CHS.A392 - Handwritten on negative envelope: "Tafoya, Juan R. 1890." Name on envelope may be either that of the subject or the person who purchased the image. I don't know if Juan R. Tafoya is part of your line.

I am very sure of the placement. At one time this would have been a view along the only road TO Trinchera at the time from Engleville. I am looking through pictures from the family home to post.
