    Summary: This position is responsible for the operations of the City of Walsenburg’s Family Aquatic Center. The individual performs a variety of administrative, supervisory, and professional duties assigned by the City Administrator. The individual must possess excellent public relations skills. The individual works under the general supervision and direction of the City Administrator and Public Works Director and provides direct supervision to pool staff.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are illustrative but are not intended to be all-inclusive:

    • Manages and operates Family Aquatic Center
    • Places advertisement with local newspaper for seasonal recruitment of personnel to staff swimming pool
    • Interviews and hires Aquatic Center staff, including background checks, certification checks, etc.
    • Works with Administration office to schedule orientation of new hires
    • Schedules and maintains working hours for Aquatic Center personnel
    • Performs staff training to orient staff to facility, policies, maintenance, and position procedures
    • Conducts in-service training with lifeguards to review skills and emergency procedures
    • Ensures all rules and regulations are followed at all times by staff and public
    • Establishes and maintains a good public relations image for all aquatic programs and activities
    • Responsible to organize and administer a comprehensive community swimming program
    • Schedules, conducts, and works with instructors to coordinate swim lessons
    • Performs maintenance checks on all Aquatic Center equipment to ensure machinery is working properly
    • Performs maintenance on safety equipment to ensure all safety equipment is in good condition and operational
    • Checks chemical levels to ensure chemical balances are safe
    • Works with the Public Works Department regarding pool maintenance issues
    • Works with the Administration office to order pool supplies
    • Administrative duties:
    o Checks and authorizes personnel’s times on timecards
    o Completes forms in association of Aquatic Center rentals
    o Completes conduct and accident reports
    o Maintains and completes admission records and sales reports
    o Maintains and completes chemical level records
    o Maintains other related reports or records
    • Takes cash, receipts, and reports to Administration office by 1:00 p.m. the following day of receipts, except Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Those funds must be turned in on Monday mornings
    • Attends scheduled staff meetings
    • At season’s end, works with Administration and Public Works to ensure all personnel matters, paperwork, maintenance of pool, etc. is complete
    • Other duties as required to perform


    Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance in and out of the different pool areas; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the ability to hear distress calls above pool noise.

    Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

    This position is located in an outdoor aquatics facility. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly exposed to noise, extreme heat, ultraviolet rays from the sun and pool chemicals.

    Qualifications Requirements:

    High School Diploma and have or obtain a certified Pool Operator (CPO) designation. College and three (3) years experience in operations of aquatic facilities, and at least two (2) years experience supervising aquatic programs preferred. An equivalent combination of education, skills, and abilities may be considered.

    Individual must have knowledge of lifeguard techniques, American Red Cross swimming programs, pool safety, water chemistry, pool maintenance, and operations. The individual must be able to maintain effective working relationships with employees, peers, supervisors, and the public. The individual must be able to visually monitor pool area and respond quickly to emergencies.

    The individual must hold a current certification in Pool/Spa Operator (CPO) and preferably hold or obtain certifications as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Lifeguard Instructor Training (LGI), Certified Lifeguard Training (LG), and Community First Aid and Safety (CPR-PR)
