    History/Info needed on Smith/Musgrave Family

I am the grandson of John Smith Jr. who was born on Feb. 13 1927 to John Smith Sr. (originally from Yorkshire, England) and Marion Musgrave (originally from Canyon City, Colorado). I am interested in visiting the town to do some family history research, but would love to find out as much as possible before making the trip out from California.

Apparently My Great-Grandparents owned some type of general store/saloon in Aguilar and it may have had some sort of boarding house attached. My Grandfather had a brother named Earl and sisters Marion and Maudie.

My Great-Grandmothers parents were Joshua Musgrave (originally from Hartford City, W. Virginia) and Maudeline Archibald (originally from McKeys Port, Pennsylvania).

Hopefully some of these details will spark some memories or relate to some local information or history. I am very interested in finding the location of the business/residence that they occupied when my Grandfather was young and any other related information, photographs, etc.

I have a photo of my Great Grandfathers gravesite (he passed away in 1942, but i am unsure of the month), which I would also like to visit if it is still there. I tried to upload it to the forum, but it wouldn't work. The location of the graveyard is unknown to me at this time, but the gravesite behind belongs to one Anton Roman (1893-1944) if that may help in locating the site.
Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to offer.

    Derek

    If it may help you:
The marriage of the Musgrave's took place on Christmas Eve,1883 in Grundy County,IL; they are indexed as "Joshua Musgreve and Maudlen Archibald".

In the 1870 Grundy Co.,IL census,Joshua's family is:
    Musgrave,Joshua-30;born England; coal miner
    wife-Margaret-27;born England
    son-Joshua-7;born VA
    son-Anthony-5;born IL
    son-Robert-1;born IL

Margaret Musgrave died between 1872 and 1878; on Mar.9,1878,in LaSalle Couny,IL Joshua Sr. married the widowed Emily Mason.

    In 1880 Ogallah,Trego,KS they are:
    Musgrave,Joshua-42;born ENG;farmer
    wife-Emily-33;born OH
    son-Joshua-17;born VA
    son-Anthony-15;born IL
    son-Robert-11;born IL
    son-George-9;born IL
    son-Johnny-8;born IL
    son-Freddie-2m; born KS
    stepdaughter,Mason,Iva-10;born IL
    stepson-Mason,Chester-8;born IL

The 1900 Ogallah census gives birth date for Joshua of Oct.1838 and Nov.1845 for Emily. She has had 6 children, and 5 are living;at home are Fred born March 1880 and Walter born Feb.1885.

MANY Musgrave's buried in Ogallah,KS-including Joshua Sr.and wife:
    http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/treg...m-ogallah.html

    1900 census,Aguilar,CO
    Musgrave,Joshua-born May 1863;37;married 17yrs;born VA,parents born ENG;saloon keeper
    wife-Maude-Feb.1868;32; 6 children born, 5 living;born PA,parents born Scotland
    daughter-Maggie-born Apr.1888;12;born KS
    son-Roy-born Oct.1889;10;born CO
    daughter-Marion-born July 1891;8;born CO
    daughter-Viola-born Aug 1893;6;born CO
    daughter-Edith-born Feb 1896;4;born CO

And of course in 1930,John and Marion Smith live in Aguilar-with 3 year old twins John and Marion-on Main Street and he runs a hardware store.

There is an obit available for "Maude Mae Musgrave",printed in the Pueblo Chieftain on July 8,1963.
    If this person is one of "yours" you can order a copy from the Pueblo Library for $3;

Thank you once again! This is great information. I wasn't aware of the marriage information for my great grandparents, and it appears that I now have some information relating to my great-great grandparents also.

    Thank you SO much!

Where was this information located? I am extremely interested in finding out where the hardware store was located and whether the building is still standing or being used so that I can visit when I come down. Also I want to find out the address of their former residence, which may be that same as the business.

The 1930 information for John and Marion is from the census image. It gives their address as #92 Main Street, but whether that is a real house number or number assigned by the enumerator I can't say.

You might want to read up on how to get copies of marriage records from IL--depending on county and time frame, IL certificates can have wonderful information on them--

The 1930 census shows that John and Marion Smith lived on Main Street. It also shows that John was 33 yrs. old and Marion was 23 yrs. old at first marriage. Year of Immigration for John Smith 1896; Naturalization - NA. Estimated year of birth for John abt.1882 and Marion abt. 1892.
