"Keeping the Sopris Spirit Alive!"

Former residents and friends of Sopris, the mining town that was ”drowned” in early 1970 when Trinidad Lake dam was built as an irrigation and flood control project by the US Army Corps of Engineers, will gather tomorrow for a reunion on the south shore of the lake.
“Every five years we do this reunion,” says Sharon Butero, one of the organizers of this year’s event, which includes a 10 a.m. mass. Attendees are asked to bring their own picnic lunch, and are promised plenty of enjoyment with others are they reminisce about one of Colorado’s oldest coal mining communities. The day will conclude back in Trinidad with a late-afternoon social at JuJo’s .
