    Orslands?

If any one has any information about the Orslands who are from Branson, CO
I would greatly appreciate. I dated Gary Orsland the summer before he left for boot camp and wrote him while in Viet Nam until he sacrificed his life while trying to save others.

    Re: Orslands?

The only family I find with this name is in the
1920 census Jaroso District 39 Costilla County Colorado:

Thomas Orsland born in Norway 63, immigrated to the U.S. in 1872, he was a farmer
Amalia, wife, 37, born in Norway, immigrated to the U.S. in 1902
Annie 16, born in Norway immigrated 1902
    Thomas 11, born in Iowa
    Jacob 6, born in Iowa

There were marriage licenses issued for:
Annie Orsland with Edwain H. Haines ~ 16 Oct 1922, Costilla County #593
Mrs. Amelia Orstand with Guy Cole ~ 19 Apr 1923, Costilla County #620 (possible that she is Amalia)

    Chronicle News
FUNERAL SERVICES SET FOR PFC GARY ORSLAND

The group of five teen-aged Trinidad youngsters came in a group to the Selective Service office in Trinidad a little more than a year ago today.

They were eager and enthusiastic. They wanted to join the U.S. Marines because "they wanted to become a man".

They also wanted to go to Vietnam....."where the action was."

In Trinidad Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, funeral services will be held for a member of that group of youngsters--20 year old U.S. Marine PFC Gary V. Orsland--who was killed in action in South Vietnam July 29.

Orsland, who received two wounds while serving in Vietnam, had just returned to duty from an "R and R" (rest and relaxation) leave in Hawaii only two weeks before he was killed.

Rev. James W. Richie, pastor of the First Christian Church of Trinidad, will officiate at the chapel services at the Campbell-Lewis-Swickard Funeral Home, beginning at two p.m.

Burial services will follow in the Masonic Cemetery.

Orsland was born July 15, 1948, to Jake and Virginia L. Orsland of Trinidad. He was a graduate of Trinidad High School and attended Trinidad State Junior College.

He was the fourth person registered for the draft at the Las Animas County Draft Board to be killed in the Vietnam War. Orsland enlisted in the U.S. Marines June 28, 1967.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Orsland of Branson: a sister, Mrs. Craig Foster of San Mateo, California : two step-sisters, Audrey Green and Mrs. Karen Winford, both of Branson, and an uncle, Dr. J. Gaylord Varner of Trinidad.

    Orsland's mother died September 7, 1963.

Other survivors include two aunts, Mrs. Bessie Roberts of Colorado Springs and Mrs. Annie Haines of Denver, and numerous cousins and other relatives.

    Alice
This is what I was looking for, mainly who his parents were ( I knew his mom had passed) but did not know of any other relatives.
I also found out that Gary was on the radio, frantically calling for help, when he was struck down. Another Marine also named Gary, tried to save him, rushing him to the helicopter, but died in his arms.
Though the years I have lost all of the letters and pictures that he had sent me.
Is there any chance that a picture of him could be found? If so could you email it to me?

    Thank You Again,
    Marti

    Re: Orslands?

Added info - Gary V. Orsland son of Jacob aka Jake Orsland and Virginia L. Varner. The family tree that I am looking at shows that Gary Orsland had a sister, Judy Varner who married Craig Foster. No pictures are shown on the tree but perhaps someone will be able to connect to your inquiry.

Jake Orsland died JUN 1981; Branson, Las Animas, Colorado. Virginia L. Varner died 7 SEP 1963; Trinidad, Las Animas, Colorado.
