Area television stations have asked Pueblo District Judge Victor Reyes for permission to install a single camera in the courtroom to film the proceedings in the murder trial of Paul Wayne Stark. The request asks for a single camera to be placed in the courtroom that would be a pool camera for all television stations. The request also asks to install audio devices in the courtroom as part of an agreement between the stations. Stark is charged with first-degree murder and sexual assault for the March 2009 killing of Ashley Patterson, 14, in Pueblo West. Public defender Kim Karn has already filed a motion to move the trial away from Pueblo because of intense media coverage. The concern over finding an impartial jury prompted Reyes to set aside three days next week for jury selection. If a jury cannot be chosen from the pool of more than 160 people that have been summoned next week, the trial will likely be moved.

Eddie Lobato, of Costilla County, was sentenced to 20 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections yesterday for the deaths of two people in a traffic accident. Lobato was facing sentencing yesterday for two counts of reckless homicide in the deaths of Clyde Carson, 63, and Dorothy Lopez, 53. Carson and Lopez were found dead last November 17th near a vehicle at Costilla County Roads J.2 and J.8. They were pronounced dead at the scene by Costilla County Coroner Weylan Vigil, and their bodies were taken to the El Paso County Medical Examiner’s Office in Colorado Springs for autopsies. The Colorado State Patrol investigated the incident and conducted a search for the driver of the vehicle that had been abandoned near the accident site. Lobato was eventually found to be involved in the accident. District Judge Pattie Swift sentenced Lobato to 10 years in the Department of Corrections for each of the deaths, with the terms to be served consecutively. Deputy District Attorney Mark Franklin said he was satisfied with the sentence.

A $293 million investment announced yesterday by the U.S. Transportation Secretary means that residents in dozens of communities nationwide will soon enjoy major transit improvements. In Colorado, three projects were chosen from 281 applications nationwide with one of those projects in Las Animas County receiving $152,500, which will allow the South Central Council of Governments to construct a multi-modal transit center in downtown Trinidad that will provide connections for Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, Greyhound, and other inter-city bus services to connect transit within the region. The transit center will provide park-and-ride facilities, parking for large buses and vans and shuttle service for passengers to hotels and other destinations. The money is being provided by the Obama administration’s livability initiative to better coordinate transportation, housing and commercial development.
