Pueblo County Coroner James Kramer said Friday that a portion of a jawbone found on July 5th in Rye has been identified as Native American remains. The portion of a human’s lower jaw was found in the 9700 block of Colorado 165 by a family from Texas that was visiting their mountain cabin, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies searched the area but did not find any further remains. The age of the bone is still pending and the state archaeologist is also involved in the case. On July 17th, human remains were discovered on Doyle Road in southern Pueblo County. Those remains, believed to be that of an adult male, have also been turned over to a forensic anthropologist for study. Those bones are believed to have been undiscovered for one or two years. Investigators say there are no signs of foul play. A cadaver dog will be used to search the area where the bones were found.
City residents attending the Alamosa City Council meeting last week took the city’s side in the debate over the proposed new city hall complex, in response to comments shared by the public two weeks ago. Those who spoke said they felt it was time that those who support the city make their voices heard and that opponents were using a $10 million plus figure as the cost of the project when the low bid was less than $6 million. The new complex would also support the police and fire departments, support the library, support city leaders and help build a new Americans with Disabilities Act compliant city hall. Alamosa voters have already received their ballots that include a question asking if residents want to repeal or retain the city ordinance that sets up the financing for the new complex. The project would include remodeling the existing city hall building for police and fire departments and constructing a new city hall/library just east of the current facility.
