Fred Edward Kokjohn, 86, of Trinidad, passed away on Nov. 15, 2010 at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo.
Fred was born in Raton, N.M., on Feb. 15, 1924, to Elizabeth and Fred H. Kokjohn. During WWII, Fred spent several summers traveling to California where he worked on airplanes for the war effort at Lockheed Martin. After completing high school and taking accounting classes, Fred moved to Trinidad. He met his future wife at M&M Distributing, where they both worked. Fred and Caroline (Riggio) married on Oct. 30, 1949. After the birth of their first child, they moved to Alamosa, where Fred ran a warehouse and where their next two children were born. A devoted family man, Fred and Caroline relocated their family to T r i n i dad to be near his mother and sister, who both lived here. Throughout his career, Fred provided bookkeeping services for many businesses in Trinidad.
In 1960, Fred became a partner at the Trinidad Janitor Supply, which he ran until his retirement in 1989. During his retirement, Fred continued to help with the bookkeeping at the Janitor Supply, in addition to volunteering at the Welcome Center with his wife.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Fred H. Kokjohn of Raton; his sister, Mildred Benedetti of Trinidad; his nephew, David Benedetti; and, his granddaughter, Virginia Van Westen of Estes Park.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Caroline Kokjohn of Trinidad,and by his six children, ten grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter: daughter Loretta (Kokjohn) & Doug Van Westen of Estes Park and their children Elizabeth (Van Westen) & Joshua Westmoreland of Estes Park, Matthew & Jadwiga Van Westen of Estes Park, and their daughter, Maja Virginia; daughter Janine (Kokjohn) & Boyd Funk of Garden City, Kan., and their children Elliot Funk and Samantha Algrim Funk of Wichita, Kan., and Sam & Chelsea Funk of Glendale, Ariz., son Fred “Fritz” Kokjohn of Trinidad; daughter Carol Ann (Kokjohn) & Danny Alexander of Satanta, Kan., and their children Tyrel, Tucker, Trevor, and Katherine Elizabeth Alexander of Satanta, Kan., daughter Mary Lou (Kokjohn) & Tom Risley of Gillette, Wyo., and their children Garrett Risley of Denver and Kurt Risley of Gillette, and, son Christopher and Janice Kokjohn of Trinidad.
Funeral Mass was Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, at Holy Trinity Church. Internment followed at Trinidad Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Elliot Funk, Boyd Funk, Matt VanWesten, Garrett Risley, Danny Alexander, David Gallino. Honorary Pallbears: Joe Micheli, Al Slavek.
