Shirley Marie LePlatt, 90, died Jan. 27, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born April 15, 1921, in Hicks to Flora (Mulluaghney) Ellis and Harry S. Ellis.

She attended Aguilar schools, East Street School and graduated in 1939 from the old Trinidad High School.

She was united in marriage Nov. 18, 1939, to Harry LeRoy LePlatt in Raton, N.M. The couple were happily married for 72 years on a foundation of honesty and mutual respect.

In their later years, Shirley and LeRoy founded a cattle ranch and goat dairy. The business became their pastime and they were inseparable as they worked the cattle side by side each day.

Shirley was an expert horsewoman and rode beside LeRoy in the Trinidad Roundup Labor Day Parade during America's bicentennial year. The couple won the coveted bicentennial riders trophy that year.

In 2003, Shirley and LeRoy were named grand marshal and silver queen of the round-up parade and rodeo.

Shirley's hobbies included crochet work, hunting for arrowheads and tending her garden and flowers. One of her favorite activities was cooking for her children and grandchildren every New Year's Day, a cherished family tradition.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Harry S. and Flora M. Ellis; her brother, Dan Ellis; her sister, Vi (Paul) Riggs; and her brothers- and sisters-in-law: Elmer LePlatt, Gene (Lucille) Day and Earl (Pauline) Sullivan.

Shirley is survived by her husband, LeRoy LePlatt; her daughter, Gloria (Frank) Sciacca, of Ludlow; her son, Jim (JoAnn) LePlatt, of Trinidad; her son, Bob (Jacquie) LePlatt, of Sarcillo; her daughter, Sally (Gary) Waller of Aguilar; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; her brother, Pat (Audrey) Ellis, of Grand Junction; sister-in-law, Bernice LePlatt, of Sarcillo; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation was 3-7 p.m. Jan. 31 followed by a 10 a.m. Feb. 1 service at Comi Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Louise Nelson officiating. Interment followed at Masonic Cemetery.

Honarary pallbearers were Frank Sciacca, Ken Sciacca, Gary Waller, Jim Chongway, Cliff Santistevan, Dave Bachicha, Eric Sobel and Pat Ellis.

Active pallbearers were Jack Sciacca, Nick Sciacca, Rick Sciacca, Jerry LePlatt, Keith Waller and Seth Sciacca.
