John V. Battistone, 82, died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, at Miner’s Colfax Long Term Care Center in Raton, N.M.
John was born May 2, 1929, in Sopris to Giovanina (Delusia) and Orazio Battistone. John attended school in sopris and graduated from Lincoln High School. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War.
John was united in marriage Sept. 2, 1955, to Catherine Curro. To this union a daughter, Johnalin, was born several years later.
For more than 30 years, John worked at Colorado Fuel & Iron’s Allen Mine. He made numerous friend in this job and as a member of UMWA Local 9856.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Giovanina and Orazio Battistone; his beloved wife Catherine; his sister, Eva Battistone; and his brother, Tony Battistone.
He is survived by his daughter, Johnalin (Orville) Zimmerman of Denver; his loving granddaughters Giana Zimmerman and Alyssa Zimmerman; his sister, Perina Hughes; sisters-in-law, Sara Appie and Dorothy Battistone; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will take place from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Comi Funeral Home Chapel followed by a 10 a.m. Thursday, March 8, funeral Mass at Holy Trinity Church and interment at Trinidad Catholic Cemetery with service by the Fort Carson Honor Guard.
Honorary pallbearers are John’s nephews, Joseph Navara Jr., James LePlatt and Bill Volturo. Active pallbearers are John’s nephews Joe Navara III, Buddie Curro, Dave Curro, John Curro, Dave Bachicha, Buck Apple, Butch Curro.
