Pueblo County District Judge Thomas Flesher yesterday found probable cause to try Gilbert O. Sanchez, 36, on three counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of child abuse causing serious bodily injury for the April auto accident that killed three Alamosa teens and injured two Pueblo girls. The court did not hold a preliminary hearing on the other 10 counts that Sanchez is facing because he is free on bail. None of the 15 charges against Sanchez were dismissed yesterday. Witnesses testified yesterday that the car driven by 18-year-old Anisa Montoya, and carrying Serina Sena and Selena Mascarenas, both 14, was making a legal left turn from northbound Pueblo Boulevard onto westbound Northern Avenue when the truck Sanchez was driving south on Pueblo Boulevard ran the red light and smashed into the vehicle. The accident killed the three girls and seriously injured Jade Dorrance, 14, and Jordyn Carrillo, 13, who were riding in the bed of Sanchez’s truck. Sanchez’s blood-alcohol level was extreme. Blood draws an hour after the accident showed a level of 0.298. Sanchez is set to appear in court again in August to schedule a motions hearing and to possibly set a trial date.
Even though Governor John Hickenlooper has decided to lift the statewide fire ban in Colorado, the action will not affect the restrictions already in place in most counties in southeastern Colorado. Officials in various counties in southeast Colorado have said that they will continue to monitor the situation, but won’t lift the stage I and stage II fire bans currently in effect in their counties, especially because the forecast is calling for area temperatures to get into the triple digits again soon. While a good deal of moisture has fallen throughout the area, the vegetation remains dry and only a little heat will cause the extremely dry conditions to return to the area.
