Alamosa County is offering free scrap metal collection at the old landfill site on road 8 south about 5 miles west of U.S. 285. The collection will take place through December 4th and is being offered on a trial basis. Residents may take old appliances and metal objects to the site to be compacted. There is no charge for the service; however, county commissioners are asking that those who use the service donate nonperishable food items for the emergency food bank. Elderly people and those who cannot deliver their own scrap may call 589-3841 for assistance. Alamosa county sheriff Dave Stong has volunteered prisoners to help with the project.

A man who is being sought for questioning in the disappearance of his mother was arrested in New Mexico yesterday after a 100-mile-per-hour chase on i-25 through Trinidad and Raton. Robert Mountz, 21, was arrested after the vehicle he was driving was spotted by Colorado state patrol officers about 5 miles north of Trinidad. They attempted to pull the vehicle over, but after the Dodge Durango that Mountz was driving stopped, it took off again and officers began the pursuit. Mountz successfully avoided stop-sticks on the north side and south side of Trinidad, but was eventually forced off the road about 12 miles south of the state line. He was arrested by New Mexico state police and is being held for authorities in Colorado Springs. Mountz is not wanted in the disappearance of his mother, Beverly Mountz, 55, who was last seen about 5:30pm on Tuesday, however, authorities are interested in talking to him about her disappearance. Mountz is wanted for walking away from a department of corrections facility on October 30th, and will now also face numerous traffic charges resulting from the high-speed chase.
