A majority of county clerks in Colorado want next year’s election to be conducted entirely by mail. Four county clerks told state lawmakers last Friday that 70% of clerks in the state want an all-mail election in 2008, when voters will elect a new U.S. Senator and a new president. The clerks told lawmakers that most counties don’t have enough money to purchase new voting machines. The clerks said that even if new machines could be purchased, there wouldn’t be enough time to train staff in how to use them. Secretary of State Mike Coffman last week decertified equipment made by three of four manufacturers used by the state. Coffman said he opposes an all-mail election as voters could be influenced by others in casting their ballots. County clerks are asking lawmakers to pass legislation that would make the election an all-mail election. Coffman wants a bill to streamline the approval process for the machines.

Alamosa District Judge Pattie Swift sentenced Michael Gallegos, 24, last week to probation for two years, assessed more than $300 in fees and costs, required Gallegos to complete 50 hours of community service and substance abuse treatment. Swift also prohibited Gallegos from consuming any alcohol while on probation. Gallegos pled guilty to misdemeanor theft in connection with his taking a check written to another employee at his place of employment. Gallegos then gave the check to a third party who tried to cash it unsuccessfully at Atencio’s Market. Swift told Gallegos that he could be sentenced up to 18 months in jail if he violates his probation. Gallegos said that he has cleaned up his life since being released from jail, but still wanted to take substance abuse classes.

The Trinidad and Las Animas County Chamber of Commerce will award the 2007 Chenoweth Public Service Award at their annual dinner and casino night at Aultman Hall on Saturday, February 2nd. The Chenoweth Public Service Award honors an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the Trinidad and Las Animas County Community. The Colorado Department of Revenue will offer a no-cost training class regarding state sales and use tax on Wednesday, January 16th, from 1 to 4:00pm, at 4420 Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs. The three-hour class includes new and relevant information on a variety of sales and use tax topics, and offers a general review of forms related to sales and use tax collection and remittance.
