About 14,000 people filled the Colorado State Fairgrounds Grandstand Arena in Pueblo yesterday to hear Illinois Senator Barack Obama and to cheer their candidate. The crowd hoping to see Obama was so large that many were turned away and never got the chance to see Obama speak. Much of Obama’s 45-minute speech was taken directly from his acceptance speech that he gave at Invesco Field in Denver on August 28th. Obama repeated key passages of that speech, such as cutting taxes for 95% of American families who earn less than $250,000 a year. He also repeated his goal of weaning the U.S. economy off of imported oil over 10 years and expanding health care insurance to cover all Americans. Obama blamed republicans for pushing a deregulation philosophy that helped spur the securities industries to fashion unregulated, high-risk investments out of sub-prime mortgages, which have plunged in value over the past year. Obama finished his speech saying that he needs all the votes he can get in Colorado and that he feels good about his chances in Colorado, in Pueblo, and across the nation.

No one was seriously injured yesterday in a traffic accident that occurred at Highways 285 and 142 about 11:55am yesterday. According to the Colorado State Patrol, Betsy Gylling, 42, of Romeo, was southbound on Highway 285 when she turned left in front of an oncoming northbound vehicle driven by Aparo Cortez-Rodriguez, 44, of La Jara. Rodriguez’s vehicle, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, struck Gylling’s 2006 Kia Rio on the front bumper and left side, sending it counter-clockwise into the northbound lane of Highway 285. The Chevrolet ran off of the right side of the highway and struck both a stop sign and a delineator post coming to rest in the merge lane northbound on Highway 285. Gylling was transported to the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa by private vehicle. Rodriguez was taken to the Conejos County Hospital by ambulance. Two children who were not restrained in the Rodriguez vehicle were not injured. Charges are expected to be filed following the investigation.

The Monte Vista School District is asking voters to issue a bond and a mill levy override in an effort to invest in education, helping students to thrive, communities to grow, businesses prosper and to help property values increase. Funds raised as part of the bond issue/mill levy override would go towards relieving the current overcrowding at Marsh School by remodeling the gym and cafeteria and by adding classrooms and library space; constructing a new practice gym at the middle school; and by constructing a new gym and concession area at the high school required to provide similar athletic opportunities for both boys and girls. The new gym would also allow Monte Vista to host sports tournaments which can generate as much as $17,000 for the school district and community per tournament.

Candace Sobel, M.D., joined the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Department as of August 1st. Sobel attended the University of Kansas Medical School where she also did her residency and then taught medical students for 10 years. Sobel said she and her husband liked the area and thought that the valley was beautiful so they decided to they’d had enough of the humid mid-western weather in Kansas. Sobel says her goal is to be the best primary care doctor she can be. She is now accepting new patients over the age of 18.
