A Short Description
Of Selected Legends
The audio tape consists of nearly two hours of stories and sound effects along with directions about the 24 stops. Here is a short synopsis of a few of those stories.
Legend #10 tells of a mysterious story "Inside The Earth." It is a story Mr. Hatcher told frequently and was written down in 1847. As Mr. Hatcher rode his pony up the Purgatorie River he said something did not feel quite right for he could not turn his horse from the path it took up a narrow canyon. As he reached the cliffs at the end of the cayon a force greater than he pulled him and his horse into the mountain which just seamed to open up as he got to it. After reluctantly entering the rock wall, he experienced some very unusual happendings which he describes in great detail. For one thing he was taken down some steep steps that continued deeper and deeper until they were directly under the Spanish Peaks. That is where "the place smelt hot and bad like brimstone." All of a sudden a door opened and a blaze of fire, red and gloomy broke loose with black smoke curling and twisting. His eyes burned and his ears became filled with the sounds of bells, chains clinking and mad howls… What happens next is explaind on the tape and CD.
Legend #11 tells how an Indian Chief lived in the area until he disappeared. He is called "Chief Gran-do-te." Louis Sporleder tells about how Gran-do-te was carrying gold south towards Mexico one day when he had a vision. He dreamed about his wife whom he left in Mexico was being killed and eventually his dream proved true. Gran-do-te went through weeks of mourning, stopped having dreams and even stopped eating. He eventually told his friends that the last time he felt at peace was at the Spanish Peaks which he called Huajatolla. He and his friends and a number of other families traveled north under his leadership towards the Huajatolla. Something unusual happened once he reached the Spanish Peaks and it is described in the audio tapes and CDs.
Legend #12 is a little more humorous and it is the "Bear Lake Story." In my research, I actually found two stories about how Bear Lake got its name. One tells about bears living in the valley and enjoying the wild potatoes which grew near the lake. The other story is about the game warden. This story was not recorded by the game warden for he was probably too embarrased about what happened, but you can listen to the story on either the audio tape or CD.
