A Short Description
Of Selected Legends
The audio consists of nearly two hours of stories
and sound effects along with directions about the 24 stops.
Here is a short synopsis of a few of those stories.
Legend 20 - Monument's Legend
An unusual place for pictures and an unusual legend about the
rock that sticks out of the lake.
Legend 22 - Hidden Indian Trails
This is one of those legends based on fact, but covered in mystery..
Legend 24 - The Santa Fe Trail
This legend is packed with facts and tales about this portion
of the Santa Fe Trail.
Legend #10 tells of a mysterious
story “Inside The Earth”. It is a story Mr. Hatcher
told frequently and was written down in 1847. He said that as
he rode his pony up the Purgatorie River something did not feel
quite right for he could not turn his horse from the path it
took up a narrow canyon. As he reached the cliffs at the end
of the canyon a force greater than he pulled him and his horse
into the mountain which just seemed to open up as he got to
it. After reluctantly entering the mountain, he experienced
some very unusual happenings which he describes in great detail.
Those details are described on the audio tape and C.D.
Legend #11 tells how an Indian
Chief lived on the Spanish Peaks. He was called “Chief
Gran-do-te”. Louis Sporleder tells about how the Chief
was carrying gold south towards Mexico one day when he had a
vision. He dreamed that his wife, whom he left in Mexico, was
being killed and when he got there he found out it really happened.
Gran-do-te went through weeks of mourning, stopped having dreams
and even stopped eating. He eventually told his friends that
the last time he felt any peace was at the Spanish Peaks, which
he called Huajatolla. He and his friends soon traveled north
to the Huajatolla and something unusual happened once he reached
them. The tapes and C.D.s describe what happened.
Legend #12 is a little more
humorous and it is the “Bear Lake Story”. In my
research, I actually found two stories about how Bear Lake got
it’s name. One tells about bears living in the valley
and enjoying the wild potatoes which grew near the lake. The
other story is about the game warden. That story was not recorded
by the game warden for he was probably too embarrassed about
what happened, but you can listen to the story on either the
audio tape or C.D.
Other legends in this tape series come from
Native American stories and some are pioneer and cowboy tales.
Some Legends are about bandits, coal camps, Kit Carson, the
dance of brave deeds and buffalo hunters. Others describe the
end of the giants or the end of the dinosaurs. |
