Along Highway #12 The foothills between Trinidad, Colorado and Walsenburg,
Colorado are filled with beautiful places to visit, a variety of geological formations, a
change in vegetation, legendary tales, a place of wilderness areas and wild animals.
Following Highway #12 around the Spanish Peaks you can travel from the plains of
eastern Colorado, at 6,000 feet above sea level, to the top of Cucharas Pass, at 11,000
feet above sea level. I have selected the 24 best places to visit.
A list of each stop and a description about how to turn off the highway is explained on
the tape. Sample stops include:
Stop 1 - Colorado Visitor Center
Trinidad, CO
This is one place to start your trip, but you can also start at Stonewall, Colorado or
Cuchara, Colorado. The Colorado Visitor Center is located at I-25 and Highway 12 (Highway
of Legends). The tape explains a number of places to visit while in Trinidad, Colorado
Stop 12 - Stonewall
A stop here is a must since you will be right next to the vertical rock wall. It is
also a great place to park your camper, take pictures and eat at the restaurant.
Stop 13 - Monument Lake
Monument Lake is a great place to fish and stay in your tent, a camper or in one of
the cottages. Hunters and honeymoon couples like the restaurant, while kids like the boats
and horses.
There are a total of 24 places to stop along this scenic
byway and each is described on the tape. In between each of
the 24 stops, I give interesting area tales and 36 legends.
