Gordito’s Mexican Cafe in Trinidad Colorado is located on Main Street just west of the Bell Block Building across the street from the Coal Miner’s Memorial. Although they have been open for 2 years last week was our first visit and I can honestly say that we waited way too long for this excellent local home cooking. Run by Vicky Lucero, a local native of Las Animas County, this cafe is quaint and clean.
From my very first visit to Southern Colorado I was introduced to the flavorful specialty that is called Green Chile. It really is a Green Chile Stew and you will find it made many different ways and from mild to hot in spice. Most varieties are with Hatch Chiles from Hatch New Mexico or Anaheim chiles cooked down into a soup like consistency with added onions, garlic and pork stew meat. Many also add pinto beans, tomato base and green peppers or even other select goodies…..
Vicky’s green chile was absolutely some of the best that I have had in the area. I ordered Beef Enchilada Plate smothered with green chile and they put plenty of Green Chile on it too. So many restaurants are stingy with their smothering of green chile but not Gordito’s! Served with the enchilada’s was whole pinto beans (instead of the usual refried beans) and a mexican rice with a tomato base added. Yum Yum!
Barbara had the Chile Burger…..and if you have never had this local treat either you are sure to love it. This is an open faced hamburger complete with bun served with a ton of french fries all smothered with Gordito’s Green Chile. Again plenty of green chile sauce is liberally poured over the whole sandwich and fries. It won’t be long and you will be regularly ordering Smothered Green Chile Burgers too after you have one of these treats.
And to top it off they serve with many of the meals 2 sopapillas that comes with warmed honey that you can pour over this tasty pastry. Just writing this and thinking about it I am getting hungry for Gordito’s!
Prices range from $4.69 for Huevos Rancheros to $7.49 for a Combination Plate with 4 items plus beans and rice. Besides Mexican food they also serve hamburgers, BLT’s and other American dishes.
Gordito’s delivers to local businesses and homes. Their Winter Hours are from 11 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday and Sunday’s from 11am till 3 pm. Their summer Hours are 11 am till 9 pm. In the winter if it’s snowing be sure to call ahead to make sure they are open.
