Josephine DiPaola Maio died peacefully at Fishers Peak Assisted Care in Trinidad on Monday, December 26th in the 101st year of her life. She was one of eight children born to Antonio and Rosa (Dolce) DiPaola. Antonio and Rosa ran a popular grocery store on Godding Avenue in Trinidad.


Jo, as she preferred to be called, graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1922. In 1925, she married Emilio Maio and they were blessed with four children. Joseph, Eugene, Annette and Emilie.

Jo spent her married life as a diligent home-maker and loving care-taker of her family. She loved cooking, baking, gardening and cards, especially bridge. She was an avid bridge player to which her family will attest. She played bridge for over 70 years and belonged to several bridge clubs. Jo enjoyed watching sports on TV especially the Denver Broncos. Also, she was employed by The Budget Shop a womens ready-to-wear store owned and operated by her sisters, Jennie Maio and Sara Vigna. There she was in charge of alterations as she sewed beautifully.

There were two memorable moments in her life. In 1984 Jo traveled to Collesano, Sicily to visit the town where her parents were born, and to Grimaldi, Italy, the birthplace of Emilio's family. The second was the celebration in August, 2004 of her 100th birthday which was attended by more than 80 relatives and friends. Jo was preceded in death by her parents, husband Emilio, son Joseph and daughter Emilie Winn and granddaughter Susan Winn. Also, brothers Steve, Sam, and Roy DiPaola, sisters Jennie Maio, Sara Vigna and Rose Marie Price. Jo is survived by her son Eugene (Lois) Maio, daughter Annette (Gervase) Ackerman, daughter-in-law, Agnes Maio, son-in-law, Edward Winn and sister Mary Chapparo. Also survived by eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces nephews.

Visitation will be on Monday, January 2, 2006 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Fr. Gene Renard officiating. Interment will follow in the Trinidad Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers are grandchildren: Gina Bahlman, Carolyn Ingrasci, Dianne Ortiz, Joe D. Maio, Lori Phillips, Ed Maio, Chris Winn and Gianna Maio. Contributions in her memory can be made to Holy Trinity Academy, 600 Prospect St., Campus Box 208, Trinidad, CO 81082. The family has entrusted the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home with the arrangements.
