Josephine Wilkinson, age 87, of Model, passed away suddenly in Trinidad on Friday, March 10, of an apparent heart attack.

She was born in Arlington, Arizona, on December 16, 1918, to Mr. & Mrs. Reese H. Vaughn Sr. Her family was composed of five brothers and two sisters, all of whom are now deceased except for one brother. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and subsequently to Hollywood, California.


Josephine spent part of her early years working as a flight attendant for American Airlines.

On November 30, 1951, she married Charles Wilkinson of Menard, Texas, and they moved to the ranch near Model, CO the following year. At the time of her death, Josephine and her husband owned two ranches in Las Animas County, plus a smaller ranch in Menard County, Texas, leased to a family member.

A talented artist, Josephine was one of the founding members of the Trinidad Art League. She also was a long-time member of the Las Animas County Cowbelles, and belonged to the Pieirian Club. She was Silver Queen of the 2005 Roundup Parade in Trinidad.

She is survived by her husband Charles, son Bill, daughter-in-law Nancy, and granddaughter Sydney, all of whom live on the ranch, and daughter Barbara 'Barkie' Wilkinson, of Johnstown, CO., also one brother, Vernon Vaughn of Camp Verde, Arizona; brother-in-law Bill Wilkinson and wife Jimmie of Menard, TX; brother-in-law Fred Wilkinson and wife Mimi of Crane, TX; sister-in-law Winnie Lois Oates of Santa Barbara, CA; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday March 16, 2006 at 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church.

At her previous request, the body is to be cremated. In lieu of flowers , it is suggested that those who wish make donations to their favorite charities or Noah's Ark.

The family has entrusted Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home with the arrangements.
