the alamosa mosquito control district continues to discover west nile virus in mosquitoes in the alamosa area. yesterday, a trap at cattails golf course and a trap in the vicinity of 12 mile road and the 105 south tested positive. This brings the total positive tests to five since the first detection on july 13th. The district's response has been to treat an area within one and one-half miles of the trap. The treatment consists of aerial and ground spraying and one application is done immediately with a second following in the early evening hours. This has reduced the number of mosquitoes in the traps to almost zero. Three new cases of west nile virus in humans have also been reported in the state. A 48-year-old pueblo man tested positive, was hospitalized and is now recovering at home. A 45-year-old female from otero county and a 57-year-old jefferson county female have both also tested positive and are recovering. That brings the total to 4 human cases so far. Symptoms include headache, fever, neck stiffness, weakness, disorientation, tremors, convulsions or coma. People should protect themselves by using insect repellant containing 20 to 30% deet and wearing protective clothing. Call the amcd at 589-5409 for more information.

the u.s. Forest service says that it is not yet convinced that curtis bruner, the new owner of the cuchara valley ski resort, will be any better off than the 7 owners who have preceded him in the ski resort's 22 year history. However, the forest service says it does want to cooperate with bruner if he can make the resort viable. The resort hasn't opened for seven of the past 14 years, and forest officials say that they are going to stick with their plan to dismantle the ski lifts and rehabilitate the area as funds permit, beginning perhaps sometime next year. The forest service has requested specific information from bruner and his supporters including proof that he is the new legal owner instead of john lau. Bruner also must prove that he and his backers are financially able to make cuchara valley a viable resort.
