    Remember! Lock it on: KSPK-FM 103.5 & KSPK-TV Channel 34 in Trinidad

An attorney for the group ‚€œNot One More Acre!‚€Ě said yesterday that he is in the process of determining whether or not the group is satisfied that the army has turned over all of the documents it has requested regarding the expansion of the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site northeast of Trinidad. The group sued the army in February, seeking a court order to compel the army to provide a variety of documents believed to be related to the controversial proposed expansion. In a new filing in U.S. District Court, Fort Carson says that it has given the group ‚€œall documents that Fort Carson has in its possession‚€Ě. The attorney for the group, Stephen Harris of Colorado Springs, says the Freedom of Information Act lawsuit is ‚€œjust a little‚€Ě part of the group‚€™s broader goal of opposing the proposed expansion. He said the next step could be a lawsuit to block the proposal. Harris said Fort Carson has been ‚€œvery cooperative‚€Ě in turning over the requested documents after the lawsuit was filed.

The 12th Judicial District Nominating Commission has selected three top candidates for a new district court judgeship and has submitted the names to Governor Bill Ritter for the final selection. The top candidates were selected and forwarded to the governor on Tuesday. Gov. Ritter now has 15 days from today to appoint one of the nominees as the new district court judge for the 12th district. The nominees are Martin Gonzales, Patrick Hayes and Erich Schwiesow all of Alamosa. The third judge will join current District Judges O. John Kuenhold and Pattie Swift in the San Luis Valley. Martin Gonzales is a San Luis Valley native who has been Alamosa County Judge since 2001 and was the valley‚€™s first juvenile magistrate beginning in 1997. Patrick Hayes has lived in the valley since 1996 and is a former deputy district attorney in Oklahoma. He was named juvenile magistrate in 2001. Erich Schwiesow has been a valley resident since 1993. He is currently the Alamosa City Attorney.

A vote by the Rio Grande Roundtable on Tuesday forwarded a $1.5 million request to the state for funding of the Rio Grande Initiative. The request is the largest to date that the roundtable has considered and would fund a project to preserve riparian areas along the Rio Grande through conservation easements. Fred Bauder, of Crestone, cast the one dissenting vote against the project saying that he did not believe conservation easements were the best economical use of the riparian areas. In a unanimous vote, roundtable members also voted to forward a $104,000 request from the Alamosa River Watershed Restoration Foundation for state funding to help restore a portion of the Alamosa River channel. The projects will now go on to the Colorado Water Conservation Board for review and action.

The Alamosa Mosquito Control District has announced that a mosquito trap on South River Road, near County Road 12, has tested positive for West Nile Virus.
Crews were in the area yesterday afternoon fogging, checking and treating standing water, and setting more mosquito traps. Truck foggers were also scheduled to return to the area. No human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported so far this year, however, residents are still advised to wear long sleeves and long pants with socks and use a Deet repellent, and to reduce evening outdoor activities.
