Filbert Garcia, 89, died Monday Nov. 8, 2010, at Mt. San Rafael Hospitalin Trinidad, Named “Filberto” by his parents, Margaret and Felix Garcia, Filbert was born in an adobe/wood homestead house in Boncarbo. He was the oldest of six children.

Filbert served in the U.S. Air Force 65th Fighter Wing in 1946. While stationed in Saffron Walden, England, he met Alice May Bayley. They were married in Trinidad at Holy Trinity Catholic Church 1947. In January of 1957, Filbert was appointed as Probation Officer to the County Court of Las Animas County. Beginning in 1962, and through six succeeding elections, Filbert was “the Sheriff” of Las Animas County. In May of 2006, the new jail facility In Trinidad was named the Felix Garcia and Filbert Garcia Justice Center by the Las Animas County Commissioners.

The span of service to the community by the Garcia Family by fathers (Sheriffs - Felix and Filbert) and their sons (John E. Garcia Municipal Judge and Captain Steven John Garcia Colorado State Patrol/Homeland Security) extends for 73 years and the combined length and time by the Garcia family totals 131 years and still counting. The Garcia family has one of the longest tenures of the office of County Sheriff in the nation.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Felix Garcia and Margaret (Trujillo) Garcia, brother George Garcia, sisters Minnie (Garcia) Smith, Lorraine (Garcia) Barros and one great grandchild, infant Joselyn Rene Garcia.

Remaining to cherish his memory is: Wife Alice May (Bayley) Garcia, Trinidad; Sons John E. and Mary A. Garcia, Trinidad and Michael and Jude (Sneed) Garcia, The Villages, Fla. Grandchildren: Steven (Tammy) Garcia, Parker, Christine (Dan) Wheeler, Centennial, Sherri (Alan) Black, Scotland; Melissa (Robin) Gault, Littleton. Great-grandchildren: Alexander John Wheeler, Halley Marie Garcia; Liam James Gault, Callum Joel Gault, and Canaan Lee Black. Brother Felix Garcia Jr., Trinidad, and Sister Helen (Garcia) Gasnik, Denver.

At his request, cremation has taken place. A Catholic Rosary will be recited by Joe Reorda at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Monday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. The family will receive visitors the Legacy Gathering Room on Santa Fe Trail Drive after the Rosary.

A Catholic Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m., Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The family will receive visitors after the Mass at Elk’s 120 S. Maple St., Trinidad.

Filbert leaves to mourn him many dear friends, family, and professional associates. The family thanks every person who has touched Filbert’s life throughout the past 89 years.
