After
high school in Trinidad, I went to San Diego to look for
work. I lived there during World War II and returned home
to Trinidad after the war was over. I had come to San
Diego with my mom only since my dad had passed away as
well as one sister and two brothers. They got a job in
the defense plants. I had other sisters and brothers living
here also for we were a family of 12 children. I am the
youngest and there are only five of us still living as
of this writing in 1999. I worked at the Better Business
Bureau for a month and went into Civil Service at the
San Diego Marine Base. I worked in bookkeeping for three
years.
After
the war, I met and married my husband Gilbert L. Fromang
in 1951. We were blessed with one daughter, three sons
and five grandchildren. When I met my husband, he was
an apprentice plasterer and as it was during the Korean
Conflict, he joined the Air Force for four years. After
his discharge as Staff Sergeant he returned to his trade
to finish his apprenticeship. He then worked as a foreman
for a contractor and was fortunate to acquire a tract
of homes to plaster so we went into business for ourselves.
I did the office work and with four children ages 4 to
9 it was difficult, but we prevailed. Our three sons served
their apprenticeship under their father and are licensed
contractors. We incorporated in 1969 as G.L. Formang Plastering,
Inc. My husband was president, I served as secretary/treasurer.
We dissolved the Corporation in 1998 and my husband passed
away in 1993 of Colon Cancer.
Before
his death, my husband owned a 24 foot Skipjack the "Sheryl-Dee"
which was named for our daughter and myself. He went Marlin
fishing off the San Diego Coast and Deer hunting in Colorado.
He caught a World Class Fish that made the record book
in 1982 and belonged to the San Diego Marlin Club. We
had a memorable marriage for almost 43 years.
While
in business we were able to sponsor our children's various
activities in sports as well as my own bowling team. I
belonged to the American Business Women's Association
and served as President and also was named "Woman
of the Year" for my Chapter in 1976. I attended most
of the National Conventions each year and traveled to
many countries with the business women's tour group.
It
was with great satisfaction that my family read about
my grandfather who was Sheriff of Trinidad in 1890 (see
Kreeger story). I stay quite busy managing my
industrial property and enjoying my family and grandchildren.
