    (Map image ca. 1925.)

(Geological Map image ca. 1915 showing railroad lines. From Ludlow going west the mines were; Hastings & Delagua. Also notice the spelling of El Moro.)

Note: Either spelling, "Cañon", or "Canyon", will be used as required, to best reflect, or describe what has already been written by various authors, or cartographers. Where it was found spelled as "Canon" it will be replaced by a more correct Hispanic spelling with a tilda. (i.e. "Cañon".)

Information on Delagua and Hastings Mines

The Hastings and Delagua mines of the Victor American Fuel Company were located North of Ludlow up the Canyon del Agua.

Some AT&SF "livestock" cars had hatches in the roof, and also had drop bottoms (i.e. bottom doors). Railroad History of Hastings and Delagua Mines

1889 - Denver Texas & Forth Worth Railway Co. laid standard gauge tracks from Ludlow to Hastings. This coal mine branch line was constructed under the charter of another Denver Texas & Fort Worth Railway Co. owned railroad, the Cañon del Agua Railroad Co. Completed in January of 1889 and placed in operation the same month.

1890 - Union Pacific Denver & Gulf Railway Co. took control of DT&FW Railway Co. along with Cañon del Agua Railroad Co. The rail line between Ludlow and Hastings was extended during the same year.

1899 - The Victor Fuel Co. constructed a rail line for Hastings to the newly established mine at Delagua.

1904 - The Colorado and South-Eastern Railway (C&SE) laid approximately 3 miles of tracks from Barnes on the D&RG Railway west to Barnes Junction.

Also, the Colorado & South-Eastern Railway purchased the existing Colorado & Southern tracks from Barnes Junction to Hastings and Delagua. The C&SE Railroad hauled trainloads of coal to Trinidad over the Colorado & Southern tracks, and was still hauling 14 trainloads of coal daily until 1952.

1952 - The Delagua - Hastings Branch line was abandoned and subsequently the tracks
    were removed.

Hi RR-Guy thanks for those pictures of the town of Hastings my mother was born there. I never really knew where Hastings was actually at I kind of thought it was some where between Trinidad and Aguliar. My mother and the rest of her family left Hastings when she was a few years old and moved up into Gulnar where my grandfather started farming. My mother has lived in the Aguliar and Trinidad area pretty much all her life she left Trinidad after my dad died and now lives in Pueblo she will be ninedy years old in march. My dad also worked in alot of those mines from the time he was young boy till he retired. I thank you again for all the interesting history of Las Animas County. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year.
