Sara Jo Colvin Murphy, 66, Rural Olpe, Kan., and formerly of Trinidad and LaVeta, died at her home Thursday, March 12, 2009.
Sara Jo Colvin was born at St. Louis, Mo., on Nov. 20, 1942, the daughter of Richard Orville and Helen Frances (Cross) Colvin. She married Dennis Roy Murphy on Sept. 5, 1964, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, Kan.
Sara was a 1960 graduate of Shawnee Mission North High School, Shawnee Mission, Kan., and received her B.A. in Library Science from Emporia State University, Emporia, in 1964. She was a member of Sigma Kappa Social Sorority.
She was Library Director at the Trinidad Carnegie Library in Trinidad for 12 years, and also worked with her husband in several family businesses in LaVeta, Trinidad and Olpe. She held licenses as an insurance agent and real estate agent. She was active in the Republican Party in Colorado.
She was skilled in genealogy research, and she was an historian. She served as a volunteer for the Lyon County Historical Archives, Emporia, and received the President's Volunteer Service Award from the President's Council on Service & Civic Participation.
Survivors include husband Dennis of the family home, sons Thomas Murphy and wife, Cheryl, of Hersey, Neb.; Andrew Murphy, and wife Lori, Rio Rancho, N.M.; daughter: JoEllen Netherton, and husband, Alex, Las Animas; grandchildren: Casie & Bayliegh Murphy, Hersey, Jacob, McKayla, & Mya Murphy, Rio Rancho, Cody Netherton, Las Animas; sister: Nancy Christofferson, and husband, Bruce, LaVeta.
A prayer service was held at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia on Sunday, March 15. The service was led by Father Darren Henson, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia. Graveside Services will be held at the LaVeta Cemetery, LaVeta Colorado on Tuesday, March 17, at 2 p.m. The service will be conducted by Mr. John Stroh.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Cuchara Chapel, in Cuchara. Memorial gifts to the Cuchara Chapel may be sent to the Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home, 335 E. Main St, Trinidad, CO 81082.
The family has entrusted Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home with the local arrangements.
