The Waldo Canyon Fire, the most destructive fire in state history, is now 90% contained as of last night, with all of the fire area inside the Colorado Springs city limits fully contained. Full containment of the entire fire area is expected by sometime tomorrow. About 2,100 people are still evacuated due to the fire. Light rains that fell in the past couple of days over the fire area greatly assisted firefighters in their efforts in containing the now 28 square mile fire. More rain, cooler temperatures and higher humidity are predicted now through the weekend. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Lab results have confirmed that municipal water in the town of San Luis continues to meet state standards. A brief mechanical problem with a pump caused a loss of pressure in the system. Consequently, the town of San Luis Water and Sanitation District was required to flush the water system and complete testing to insure that no accidental water contamination occurred. As a precaution, residents were advised to boil water before using it for drinking or cooking until water testing results were confirmed. Water samples taken from several locations all came back with good results. Town residents may now resume using their water as normal. Municipal water has been chlorinated in the town of San Luis since an incident in February of this year prompted the town to voluntarily give up the waiver that had allowed them to decline chlorination.
